Chengalpattu District Judge convicts rice mill owner of bonded labour

On 13th March 2018, the Chengalpattu District Judge convicted the owner of a Rice Mill under Sections, 16, 17, 18 of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976. The owner was directed to pay a fine of Rs.6,000 or face imprisonment up to three months. The rice mill owner had employed 24 bonded labourers in his rice mill. The labourers were released by the then Revenue Divisional Officer of Kancheepuram, Mr. Muralidharan, on 25th May 2007, 11 years ago. A total of 17 release certificates were issued. Gopi, one of the survivors, had been working in the facility for over four years.
