Legal Research Assistant

The Mission: 
The vision of International Justice Mission (“IJM”) is to protect poor people from violent forces of injustice by working collaboratively with the government to secure their rescue and restoration.
The Need: 

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking and Legal Research Assistant who will assist and support the Prosecution and Court Development Team. The Legal Research Assistant works closely with Legal Consultants to provide legal research support to the team. The position is based in Mumbai and reports to the Senior Legal Consultant.

Job Location:

Responsibilities: 

Structural Reforms and Case Management

  • Conduct in-depth legal research as and when requested by Legal Consultants.
  • Prepare and maintain legal research briefs.
  • Keep Legal Consultants informed of relevant changes to legislation and new case laws.
  • Assist Legal Consultants in preparing matters for court including compiling case laws and conducting relevant research.
  • Provide assistance to Legal Consultants in maintaining accurate documentation and case files.
  • Provide assistance to Legal Consultants in preparation of internal and external documents.
  • Provide assistance to Legal Consultants in preparation of material for thought leadership publications.
  • Provide support to Legal Consultants in preparation of legal training materials.
  • Manage subscriptions to online research databases.
  • Provide assistance to Legal Consultants in administrative tasks and projects, as required.
  • Provide assistance and support to advocates in drafting applications, petitions and closing arguments to support the public prosecutor in IJM cases and other referral cases.
  • Provide timely, concise and thorough written reports of all activities.
  • Assist in maintaining the law library and ensure there are updated law journals and legal commentaries.
  • Manage any other tasks assigned by the Senior Legal Consultant.

Communication

  • Provide timely, concise and thorough written reports of all activities.
  • Assist in preparing stories regarding IJM’s casework for internal and external communications.

General

  • Participate & contribute effectively in case management meetings.
  • Carry out additional assignments and tasks as required by the Associate Director, Advocacy and Partnerships Develpoment.
Required Skills and Experience: 

Education

  • Law school graduate.

Experience

  • 2-4 years relevant experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code, Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act preferred.

Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Software, and Windows 2000/XP.
  • Self-motivated, articulate and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English, Hindi and Marathi.
  • Organized, meticulous attention to detail and disciplined with priorities.
  • Personable and mature judgment.
