Senior Researcher

The Mission: 
The vision of International Justice Mission (“IJM”) is to protect poor people from violent forces of injustice by working collaboratively with the government to secure their rescue and restoration.
The Need: 

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking a qualified professional to join and contribute hard work, leadership and wisdom to the team for an important research study rolling out in two of our offices in India. The successful candidate will be experienced in field-based data collection as well as qualitative data analysis and report drafting. This position is based in Mumbai, India with periodic travel within India, has an expected duration of one year, and reports to the Director-Monitoring & Evaluation and local Study Program Managers.

Job Location: 

Data Collection

  • Collect both empirical and secondary data while conducting face-to-face interviews with various levels of stakeholders of the Criminal Justice System
  • Administrate of background work necessary to schedule and properly prepare for data collection interviews
  • Transcribe and translate collected data in preparation for analysisData Transcription and translation into English
  • Collaborate with Project Manager and other researchers to update research team progress and data collection coordination
  • Strictly abide by ethical guidelines of research

Analysis and Report Drafting

  • Code and analyse collected data
  • Contribute to data interpretation along with Research Leads
  • Draft preliminary report of analysis and interpretation done by the Senior Researcher himself or herself
  • Must be open for collaborative work and frequent discussion with Research Leads and Research Coordinator
  • Critical thinking in regard to study progress and needs for readjustments at all points


  • A Senior Researcher is expected to go through and be open to all trainings given by field office staff in their areas of expertise and knowledge
  • A Senior Researcher is expected to attend and participate in discussions with field office team to get inputs and incorporate the same in research study
  • A Senior Researcher is expected to hold his/her piece of research and work assigned together and ensure it is accomplished within a strict deadline
  • A Senior Research must be able to reconcile business needs for this study with their expertise in research knowledge and tactics and creatively seek solutions for the study’s execution
Required Skills and Experience: 
  • Education
    • Masters in Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, LLB
  • Experience
    • Minimum of two years of successful experience in field-based research– particularly including any of:
      • Experience with research study life-cycles
      • Learnings and adjustments from study progress
      • Diplomatic efforts in marrying business demands with research’s academic tendencies
  • Skills
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English, Hindi and Marathi
    • Experience working cross-culturally and before high-level stakeholders
