Associate Director, Legal

The Mission: 
International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators and to promote functioning public justice systems.
The Need: 

The Associate Director, Legal will lead the legal team and his role is to oversee, Manage and contribute to the team members, and mentoring various functions of the team. Furthermore, this role will be to participate in court hearing and also to oversee the allocation of work and funds and develop a comprehensive work plan to achieve the goals of the team.

Job Location: 
  1. Guide the team with good strategies for getting convictions in bonded labour cases
  2. Provide strategic support to the team to achieve the goals by developing relationships with various stakeholders
  3. Provide strategic support by invoking appellant judicial authorities
  4. Building system through initiating litigations
  5. Participating various court hearings
  6. Act as a bridge of communication between the Legal team and other teams
  7. Seek to ensure the safety, welfare, and growth of the team as a whole
  8. Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals
  9. Genuinely value others’ ideas and expertise and willing to learn from others
  10. Share credit for team accomplishments and accept joint responsibility for team shortcomings
  11. Identify and build relationships with contacts that may help the Strategic Casework team or other IJM departments
  12. Provide legal opinions and share legal knowledge with other departments in IJM
  13. Assist in the review and drafting of legal documents for other departments
  14. Provide assistance with trainings of police, judicial or other officers


  1. Previous experience in court practice and proceedings
  2. Strong and clear communication skills with an ability to persuade
  3. Solid grasp on the law, particularly as it pertains to human rights issues
  4. Experience drafting pleading and convincing
  5. Ability to clearly and accurately provide legal assistance and advice to a wide range of audiences
  6. Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience, particularly members of the government sector
  7. Exhibited leadership and management skills
  8. Possess a basic understanding of government hierarchy and structure
  9. Possess a basic knowledge on writing complaints and applications
  10. Exhibited flexibility and agility in timing and work schedule
  11. Fluent in English and Tamil, both oral and written
Required Skills and Experience: 
  1. Bachelor Degree in Law (BL/LL.B)
  2. Must have enrolled in Bar Council of India
  3. 5 years BAR stand in criminal or Human rights practice, 2 years practice in High Court
  4. Moot court certificates preferable
